CPA to CAPI, CTR to CBO, Meta ads terminology can be confusing. This glossary defines 60+ essential Meta advertising terms across account structure, efficiency metrics, conversion events, targeting mechanics, and creative concepts.
Whether you're launching your first Meta campaign or managing millions in ad spend, understanding the platform's vocabulary is fundamental to success. This guide breaks down the terminology that matters most for paid social advertisers.
Efficiency & funnel metrics
Impressions
How many times your ad was shown, period. One person can rack up multiple impressions if they see your ad more than once. Raw impressions tell you scale but not much about effectiveness.
Reach
The number of unique people who saw your ad at least once. This is different from impressions because it accounts for the same person seeing your ad multiple times.
Example: 10,000 impressions could be 10,000 different people (10,000 reach) or 2,000 people seeing your ad 5 times each (2,000 reach).
Frequency
Average number of times each person saw your ad. Calculate it by dividing impressions by reach. Frequency above 3-4 often signals you're showing the same ad to the same people too many times, which leads to creative fatigue and wasted spend.
Formula: Total Impressions ÷ Total Reach = Frequency
Meta is phasing out unique metrics like frequency, reach, and unique clicks.
Click (Link click vs. outbound click)
A click is straightforward: it’s someone clicking on your ad (or tapping if they’re on mobile). Not all clicks are equal though:
Link clicks include any click on a link in your ad, even some internal Meta destinations. Outbound clicks specifically mean someone left Meta and went to your site. Clicks (all) refer to any and all clicks, including opening the comment section or liking the post.
Link and outbound clicks are important for conversions, but clicks (all) is also helpful. People liking and commenting on your ads generally helps with performance by signaling good health to Meta, and these are both counted by clicks (all).
CPA (Cost per acquisition)
How much you're spending to get one conversion. Divide your spend by your conversions and you've got your CPA.
Formula: Total campaign cost ÷ Total conversions = CPA
CAC (Customer acquisition cost)
CAC is similar to CPA, but goes a bit deeper. CAC specifically refers to acquiring new customers, which requires tracking first-time vs. repeat buyers differently. You can have a great CPA, but if you don’t have a strong CAC you’ll struggle to grow.
Formula: Total marketing spend ÷ New customers acquired = CAC
LTV (Lifetime value)
The total revenue a customer generates over their entire relationship with your brand. High LTV lets you afford higher CAC because you're not just making money on the first purchase. Brands with strong repeat purchases can play a different game than one-and-done businesses.
LTV calculation approaches:
- Historic: Average revenue per customer over 12/24/36 months
- Predictive: Model future revenue based on purchase behavior
- Cohort-based: Track specific customer groups over time
ROAS (Return on ad spend)
Revenue divided by spend. A ROAS of 4.0 means you made $4 for every $1 you spent. This is the standard efficiency metric for performance marketers, but it doesn't account for costs beyond ad spend like production, salaries, etc.
Formula: Total Revenue ÷ Total Ad Spend = ROAS
Example: $10,000 in revenue from $2,500 in ad spend = 4.0 ROAS
MER (Marketing efficiency ratio)
Your blended ROAS across all marketing channels. Take total revenue and divide by total marketing spend. MER gives you a fuller picture than platform-reported ROAS because it accounts for attribution issues and multi-touch customer paths.
Why MER matters: Platform ROAS numbers can be inflated by attribution overlap where multiple channels claim credit for the same conversion. MER shows your true efficiency.
AOV (Average order value)
The average revenue you make per order. If your AOV is $100 and your CAC is $30, you're probably in good shape. If your AOV is $40 and your CAC is $30, you've got a problem (unless your product costs $0 to make/ship). AOV context makes or breaks whether your efficiency numbers actually work.
View content / PDP view
A conversion event that fires when someone views a product detail page on your site. This matters because it shows shopping intent beyond just clicking your ad. Someone who views a PDP is closer to buying than someone who just hit your homepage.
Conversion events & delivery mechanics
Add to cart (ATC)
The event that fires when someone adds a product to their cart. It's a signal that someone is seriously considering a purchase, even if they don't buy immediately.
Checkout initiated
Triggered when someone starts entering payment or shipping info. This is a stronger intent signal than add-to-cart, but can be inflated if your shipping costs aren’t clear pre-checkout.
Purchase event
The moment someone completes a transaction. This is the event most performance advertisers optimize for because it's the clearest signal of business value. Your pixel or CAPI needs to fire this event reliably for the algorithm to work.
Attribution window
How long after someone sees or clicks your ad you can still credit them for a conversion. A 7-day click window means if someone clicks your ad today and converts within the next week, that conversion gets attributed to your ad. 1-day view attributes a conversion to an ad if it was viewed within 24 hours of the conversion.
Common attribution windows:
- 1-day click
- 7-day click (most common)
- 7-day click, 1-day view
- 28-day click (less common post-iOS 14.5)
View-through conversion
A conversion credited to someone who saw your ad but didn't click it, then converted later through another path. This captures upper-funnel influence that click-based attribution misses, though it's harder to rely on with iOS privacy changes.
Learning phase
The early period after launching or significantly editing an ad set when the algorithm is still figuring out who to show your ads to. Performance is volatile here and you can't trust the numbers yet. The system needs around 50 conversion events per week to exit learning.
What triggers a new learning phase:
- Creating a new ad set
- Pausing for 7+ days then reactivating
- Changing targeting significantly
- Adjusting budget by more than 20% at once
- Adding or removing ads
- Changing the optimization event
Learning limited
The warning that shows up when your ad set isn't getting enough conversions to stabilize. Usually means your budget is too low, your audience is too small, or your conversion event is too far down the funnel. Consolidating ad sets often fixes this.
Delivery (Active, paused, limited)
Status indicators for your ad sets. Active means running normally. Paused means you turned it off. Limited means Meta is constraining delivery for some reason—could be budget, learning limited status, policy issues, or audience size problems.
Thumbstop rate / hook rate
Thumbstop rate and hook rate are the same metric: the first 3 seconds of your creative designed to stop someone from scrolling past. Calculate it by dividing 3-second views by impressions. This tells you if your hook is actually working or if people are scrolling right past.
Formula: (3-Second Video Plays ÷ Impressions) × 100 = Hook Rate %
Benchmarks: Hook rates vary wildly by industry and audience, but 20-40% is generally solid performance.

Hold rate
How well your creative keeps attention after the hook. Strong hold rates mean your ad is keeping people watching, whereas a weak hold rate may suggest your hook feels disconnected from the body of your ad.
Formula: (Through plays ÷ 3-Second Video Plays) × 100 = Hold rate
Creative fatigue
Creative fatigue happens when you've shown the same creative to the same audience too many times. Frequency climbs, CTR drops, conversion rate falls, and your efficiency tanks. Essentially, Meta is running out of people to convert with this ad, and/or your target audience is getting sick of seeing the same ad.
Warning signs of creative fatigue:
- Frequency above 4-5
- CTR declining 30%+ week-over-week
- CPM increasing while reach plateaus
- ROAS or CPA deteriorating despite consistent budget

Creative concept vs. variant
A concept is the big structural idea; before/after transformation, customer testimonial, founder rant, product demo. A variant (also called an iteration) is a small change within that concept; different hook, different color palette, different opening clip.
Historically, best practice has been to test concepts and then iterate on winners. Meta’s Andromeda algorithm has made iterations less effective, but there is still some value in them.
UGC (User-generated content) ad
Ads shot in a lo-fi, authentic style that looks like it came from a real person, not a brand. It typically features creators or customers speaking directly to the camera. UGC creative is popular in paid social because it can be made with lower budgets and feels more platform-native than high-production ads.
Why UGC performs:
- Looks organic, not like an ad
- Builds trust through real people
- Feels less "salesy", especially if unscripted
- Often has higher hook rates than polished brand content
Whitelisting / partnership ads
Running ads from a creator's or partner's account instead of your brand page, with their permission. This lets you tap directly into their audience, which helps a ton with targeting. It’s an extension of UGC.

A/B test / split test
A structured test where you isolate one variable (hook, concept, audience, placement, etc.) and compare performance with enough budget and time to get reliable results. The key is changing only one thing so you know what actually drove the difference.
Proper A/B test requirements:
- Single variable changed
- Statistically significant sample size
- Sufficient time period (minimum 7 days)
- Even budget distribution
- Clear success metric defined upfront
Incrementality / lift test
A measurement approach that compares people who saw your ads versus a holdout group who didn't, telling you how many incremental conversions your ads actually drove. This gets closer to true causality than platform-reported conversions, as ad platforms often overattribute their effectiveness.
A planned, systematic approach to ideating, prioritizing, and testing creative. Start with 3-5 big concepts, test multiple hooks per concept, promote winners to larger budgets, retire losers quickly. A framework keeps you from random testing that wastes time and money.
Basic creative testing framework:
- Develop 3-5 distinct concepts based on different angles or benefits
- Create 2-3 hook variants for each concept
- Launch all variants with equal budget
- Let run for 3-7 days or 50+ conversions per variant
- Kill bottom 50% of performers
- Scale winners and iterate new variants
Account & auction basics
Meta’s advertising hub. This is where you build campaigns, launch ads, adjust budgets, and find performance data across Facebook, Instagram, and Meta’s other ad placements.
Campaign
The top layer of Meta's three-tier structure (Campaign > Ad set > Ad). Here's where you tell Meta what you're optimizing for; sales, leads, traffic, whatever matters most to your business. Your objective choice shapes how the algorithm bids and delivers your ads.
Ad set
The middle layer where the real strategic decisions happen. You're setting budgets, defining audiences, choosing placements, and picking your optimization event. Think of this as the control room for how your money gets spent and who sees your ads.
Ad
The thing people actually see when they're scrolling. Your video or image, the copy that sells it, your headline, description, and CTA button. You can test multiple ads within a single ad set to see what resonates.
Also known as creative or asset, outside Meta Ads Manager.
Objective
What you want Meta's system to maximize. Choose Sales if you want purchases. Leads if you're collecting contact info. Traffic if you just need clicks. Your objective tells the algorithm what success looks like.
Common Meta Ads objectives:
- Sales (purchases, catalog sales)
- Leads (form fills, contact info)
- Traffic (link clicks to your site)
- Engagement (post interactions, page likes)
- App promotion (installs, app events)
- Awareness (reach, brand awareness)
Optimization event
The specific action you're asking Meta to drive more of. Could be purchases, add-to-carts, leads, whatever conversion matters most. This lives at the ad set level and has a massive impact on who sees your ads and how the system bids.
Bid strategy
How you want Meta to manage your bids in the auction. Lowest cost means maximize results for your budget. Cost cap means hit a target cost per conversion. ROAS target means deliver a specific return. Each approach has different use cases depending on your goals and constraints.
Bid strategies are a divisive topic in digital advertising. Different advertisers swear by different tactics as the one true strategy that all others must follow, but the truth is people have made all of them work. You just have to find the strategy that works for you.
CPM (Cost per mille)
CPM is one of the most confusingly-named metrics in advertising. Many people assume that mille is short for million, but it’s actually Latin for thousand. So really, CPM = cost per thousand impressions.
Remember, Meta’s CPMs are based on total impressions not unique viewers. So it’s not cost per thousand people seeing your ad, it’s cost per thousand times your ad is shown to someone.
CPC (Cost per click)
How much each click costs you. This number gets influenced by auction dynamics and creative quality. If your CPC is climbing, either your creative isn't compelling enough or you're competing in an expensive space.
CTR (Click-through rate)
The percentage of people who see your ad and actually click it. This is one of your best early signals for creative quality. Low CTR usually means your hook isn't strong enough or your offer isn't relevant to the audience seeing it.
Benchmarks: Meta doesn't publish official CTR benchmarks, but most performance advertisers consider 1-2% a baseline for cold traffic, with 3%+ being strong performance.
Targeting, signals & infrastructure
Broad targeting
Minimal targeting constraints where you just set basics like country and age, then let the algorithm find your buyers based on the optimization event. This approach has become more effective as Meta's machine learning has improved, especially post-iOS 14.5.
Using broad targeting relies on your creative (ads) speaking to your intended customers. Meta’s algorithm can pick up signals as obvious as leading with “Hey marketers”, or as subtle as a book on marketing in the background.
Custom audience
An audience built from your own first-party data; website visitors, customer lists, app users, people who've engaged with your content. These are critical for retargeting and for creating lookalike audiences.
Types of custom audiences:
- Website traffic (via Pixel)
- Customer lists (email, phone)
- App activity
- Engagement (video views, Instagram profile visits, lead form opens)
Lookalike audience
An audience of new people who share characteristics with your source audience, like past purchasers or high-value customers. Meta models these audiences based on thousands of signals. Lookalikes can help you prospect more efficiently than pure broad targeting.
Lookalike percentages:
- 1% = closest match to your source (smallest audience)
- 10% = loosest match (largest audience)
- Most advertisers start with 1-3% lookalikes
Retargeting / remarketing
Targeting people who've already interacted with your brand in some way—visited your site, engaged with your content, added to cart but didn't buy. These audiences typically convert at higher rates and lower costs than cold traffic.
Advantage+ shopping campaign (ASC)
Meta's heavily automated campaign type for ecommerce where the system controls most of the targeting and delivery decisions. You mainly manage creative, budgets, and some basic guardrails. ASC can work well but gives you less control than manual campaigns, which can make it harder to learn what’s driving performance.
CBO vs. ABO (Campaign budget optimization vs. ad set budget optimization)
CBO sets your budget at the campaign level and lets Meta allocate spend across ad sets. ABO sets budgets at the ad set level so you control exactly how much each audience gets. CBO generally performs better but gives you less control over spend distribution.
Pixel
The piece of code you install on your website to track what people do after clicking your ads. It fires events back to Meta so the algorithm can optimize delivery and you can measure conversions. Your pixel needs to be set up correctly or nothing else works.
Key Pixel setup requirements:
- Install base Pixel code on every page
- Configure standard events (PageView, ViewContent, AddToCart, Purchase)
- Verify installation with Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension
- Test event firing with Events Manager
CAPI (Conversions API)

Standard event vs. custom event
Standard events are pre-defined actions Meta already understands—Purchase, ViewContent, AddToCart, Lead, etc. Custom events are ones you define yourself for specific behaviors unique to your business. Standard events get prioritized in optimization.
Event prioritization / aggregated event measurement
The system for ranking which conversion events matter most for your domain, used when tracking is limited by privacy restrictions. You typically rank Purchase highest, then AddToCart, then ViewContent, etc. This tells Meta what to prioritize when it can't track everything.
Placement (Feed, Reels, Stories, etc.)
Where your ad actually appears across Meta's properties. Instagram Reels performs differently than Facebook Feed, which performs differently than Stories. Different placements have different creative requirements and audience behaviors.
