The BEST Ad Creative Testing Methods for Performance Marketers

This video is a live AMA session hosted by Motion, featuring marketing leaders Connor MacDonald (CMO, Ridge), Cody Plofker (CMO, Jones Road Beauty), and Connor Rolain (Head of Growth, HexClad). The panelists discuss their approaches to creative testing, including how they structure tests, analyze performance, and balance creative diversity with brand consistency. They share specific examples from their brands, review ad performance using Motion reports, and answer audience questions on topics like turnaround times, key metrics, and adapting strategy when performance is down.

What's discussed, in order

2 named frameworks

01 Creative Exploration vs. Exploitation
A model for balancing the testing of net-new creative concepts (exploration) against iterating on proven winners (exploitation), with the mix shifting based on account performance.
presenter's own (Connor MacDonald) · ~40:56Play
02 Stoplight System (Red/Yellow/Green)
A simple categorization system for quickly evaluating ad test performance.
presenter's own (Cody Plofker) · ~13:11Play

What's actually believed — in their own words

The creative production flywheel is probably the hardest thing to always keep running in a DTC brand.

Connor Rolain · 2026 · opinion 06:56 #

The value that a media buyer exclusively can create has been squeezed, and really all of that value creation has come from creative strategy.

Connor MacDonald · 2026 · observation 05:26 #

The biggest missing piece in a lot of people's creative strategy is actually the being creative part.

Cody Plofker · 2026 · opinion 06:54 #

You have to contextualize [performance] by having control metrics that you're comparing to.

Connor Rolain · 2026 · observation 33:30 #

The goal of this stuff we're talking about is direct response.

Cody Plofker · 2026 · observation 49:23 #

We're in this period of exponential complexity.

Connor MacDonald · 2026 · observation 06:26 #

Clear over cute.

Connor MacDonald · 2026 · opinion 37:57 #

The heart and soul of any direct-to-consumer brand is naming conventions.

Cody Plofker · 2026 · opinion 32:33 #

The goal is not to have one winner. The goal is to have a lot of things that are working.

Cody Plofker · 2026 · opinion 09:24 #

The goal is to have a portfolio of winners.

Cody Plofker · 2026 · opinion 09:33 #

You need to be acquiring more customers, you need to be doing more revenue... the way you do that is by creating ads that speak to different people.

Connor Rolain · 2026 · observation 03:50 #

Being socially native is not off-brand unless you are Chanel or Louis Vuitton.

Cody Plofker · 2026 · opinion 49:12 #

When performance is down, you need to be taking larger swings.

Connor MacDonald · 2026 · opinion 40:30 #

The do's and don'ts pulled from the session

Do this
  • Cody Plofker: Launch new creative twice a week to maintain testing volume. 02:45 #
  • Cody Plofker: Use a stoplight system (red/yellow/green) to quickly categorize ad performance. 13:11 #
  • When performance is down, increase testing budget and take bigger exploratory swings. — Connor Rolain / Connor MacDonald, 40:30–41:37 #
  • Connor Rolain: Use control metrics to contextualize new creative test performance. 33:30 #
  • Connor Rolain: Structure ad account so the platform decides which creative to spend on (organize by ad set). 45:49 #
  • Cody Plofker: When an ad has strong engagement but poor conversion, iterate by adding product shots or value props earlier. 27:57 #
  • Connor Rolain / Cody Plofker: Use consistent, detailed ad-level naming conventions to enable creative analysis. 32:33 #
  • Cody Plofker: Test different funnel types for different content types (e.g., socially native content → video landing page). 30:00 #
  • Cody Plofker: Aim for a portfolio of winners, not a single winning ad. 09:33 #
  • Cody Plofker: Prioritize creative diversity over hyper-optimization of one format. 03:08 #
Don't do this
  • Cody Plofker: Don't get overly attached to brand guidelines (like specific fonts) when testing socially native creative. 49:47 #
  • Cody Plofker: Don't just look for one "winner" ad; aim to build a portfolio. 09:24 #
  • Connor Rolain: Don't throw away an ad that underperforms on conversion metrics if its soft metrics (Thumbstop, hold rate) are strong — iterate instead. 15:50 #
  • Connor Rolain: Don't just "check the box" of creative diversity without a strategic purpose. 10:04 #
  • Cody Plofker: Don't fixate on beating a single winner as your only creative goal. 24:39 #

To demonstrate a new, "meta" creative concept that plays on the conspiracy theory that phones are always listening for ad targeting.
Speaker's take
"This is a very new concept we've never done before. It's very like meta... It's hitting on the whole... conspiracy that like Facebook and all these ad platforms are listening to your phone and then serving you targeted ads. So this is for a Father's Day sale..."

Speaker's take

This is a gifting period, it's largely targeting women. We have the four points, it's super clear, concise, and just performs really well."

Evan Lee: Today we got the Marketing Operators crew who's going to be talking about creative testing.

Title card for the event. Text reads: "Motion | M Marketing Operators", "Marketing Operators LIVE: Creative Testing AMA". Below are headshots of three men, labeled "Connor MacDonald", "Cody Plofker", and "Connor Rolain". The host, Evan Lee, is visible in a video feed on the left.

Evan Lee: And guess what? You all get to ask every question that's been burning in your desires to be able to ask.

The screen changes to a four-quadrant video call. Top left: Evan Lee, labeled "Evan Lee, Head of Partnerships & Business Development, Motion". Top right: Connor MacDonald, labeled "Connor MacDonald, CMO, Ridge". Bottom left: Cody Plofker, labeled "Cody Plofker, CMO, Jones Road Beauty". Bottom right: Connor Rolain, labeled "Connor Rolain, Head of Growth, HexClad".

Evan Lee: Guys, what's happening?

Connor MacDonald: What's up, Evan?

Evan Lee: This is an exciting one. I'm excited to see how this goes down. I'm excited to see how this is going to come up.

Connor Rolain: Excited to chat creative today.

Evan Lee: Everybody, we have these three amazing dudes with us. Like, this is absolutely incredible and I want to be able to do them justice here. So like the first person that you can see is Cody. Cody's absolutely incredible. The chief marketing and revenue officer at Jones Road Beauty. I I call him the man, the myth, the legend. He's uh, he's he's uh at Jones Road, one of the fastest growing D2C brands and a leader in a highly competitive D2C beauty space. Uh, in addition, he's worked as a marketer, operator, advisor, investor, and consultant to some of the fastest growing D2C brands. Plus, he's just a great guy who we've known for a really long time. So, let's welcome Cody to the stage.

Cody Plofker: Thank you, Evan. Appreciate that, man.

Evan Lee: Cool, man. Cool. And then we got a couple Connors with us here today. And of course, we got to do Connor Connor Mac, right? So Connor is the CMO at Ridge and he's someone I've deeply respected from afar for a long time. Uh, Ridge is one of the heavy hitters in the D2C space, especially in men's accessories, and he runs all of their performance marketing stack, covering paid media, email marketing, CRO. Uh, and not to mention, he's a long-time friend of the Motion team here. So, welcome to the stage.

Connor MacDonald: Thank you. Thank you.

Evan Lee: I got you. I got you. And then finally, we have Connor Rolain. So Connor, my guy, we've known each other for two and a half, three years now, something like that. And he's somebody who I learn a ton from personally. He's the creative strategist behind HexClad's widely successful partnership with celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, and he oversees a diverse team responsible for performance marketing and online distribution channels. So all three of these guys are the ones you need to know and who you're going to learn from. So essentially, this is where I where I pop out, they pop in and absolutely crush it, y'all. So I'll see you during the Q&A, okay? All right.
