> • +10 years in performance marketing
> • Art enthusiast
> • Proud nerd
> • Fan of seeing people thriving to their true potential
I've been in performance marketing for over 10 years now, always on the agency side. So I've had the chance to go through hundreds of ad accounts and work with hundreds of advertisers and multiple teams. Uh, so that's a great value into connecting everything that we are covering today. Also, I'm an art enthusiast, a self-declared nerd, and a true fan of seeing people thrive using their talent, bringing their best version to to the table. So I really hope that what I'm about to share today is of value to you and for your day-to-day, for your work, and hopefully, uh, you make the best out of it and I can support you with what I'm I'm about to tell you.
So, with that out of the way, today, we are talking about Andromeda.
Slide with a grid background, a blue feather, and an iridescent stone. Text: "Today, we are talking about Andromeda".
Slide with a starry background. Text: "Meta Andromeda". Subtext: "Meta's AI ad delivery and recommendation system".
Andromeda is Meta's AI ad delivery and recommendation system. Yes, we are used to to just Andromeda, but the full title is Meta's AI ad delivery and recommendation system. And that's probably one of the main things that we misunderstood when all popped up like two years ago. And Andromeda is not a one-time update that happened and settled back then. It is a living system. It is a living AI system. When Meta launched it, uh, what we understood two years ago, a year ago, six months ago, has been evolving since since then. Uh, so that's why today we are covering this 2.0 version and how, uh, operation, how our own systems within advertisers, within agencies and among all, within teams, uh, need to adapt, grow, evolve to be able to to bring the best performance of the different creative and ads and campaigns that we're working on. So, that's why, uh, we are here today, what we are covering that, and hopefully you have a better idea of how Andromeda looks like.
Slide showing a pyramid-like structure in a library. Text: "Andromeda took the spotlight. But it actually looks more like this". The pyramid has labels: LATTICE (base), ANDROMEDA (middle), GEM (upper), USER (top).
So, again, when we talk Andromeda, we think Meta's algorithm. And when Meta announced it back then, it got all of the headlines, it took the spotlight, but the truth is that Andromeda is just one piece of an entire larger system. We are focusing, uh, on three layers today, GEM, Andromeda, and Lattice, uh, which are the actual architecture of how this algorithm looks from a bigger picture. And understanding how they work together is a foundation of everything else that we are covering in terms of how to adapt. I prefer the word adapt to fix your creative operations because this is an exercise, a recurrent exercise of adapting and evolving through the changes. We, uh, at this point, we've been on the digital, uh, marketing ecosystem, world, whatever we call it, for years, and we know that we are subject of a ton of updates and changes from conversion APIs, attribution windows, privacy limitations. So, this is another opportunity to go through this update as a, uh, as a growing ladder.
Slide with a grid background and a blue feather. Text: "It may look like the main reason why your performance has been stuck over the last few years, but in reality is that your creative systems didn't adapt."
So, we'll go back into that particular image and what those three layers look like, but what I want to make an emphasize on is that even though it looks like, and it may be the root of all of the changes and the performance challenges that we've encountered, our responsibility as marketers, as agencies, as brands, as advertisers is to, again, adapt and evolve our own systems and operations to today's reality.
Slide with a grid background, a feather, and a gem. Text: "LET'S TALK META'S AI AD DELIVERY AND RECOMMENDATION SYSTEMS".
So, let's talk about it. Let's talk about Meta system on a more tactical depth today.
The same pyramid slide from before, but now titled "Back to our friends".
Back to our friends here. We have Lattice, Andromeda, and GEM. Lattice at the bottom is the foundational architecture and framework where the system operates, where this algorithm, uh, works. Then we have Andromeda, the ad retrieval system. It analyzes millions of ads, millions of ad units in milliseconds to narrow down down into a list of probably a thousand ads. And then we have GEM at the top of the pyramid here, who is the, uh, responsible layer of narrowing down that list down, uh, into what will be the final pick, the final ad that is served in front of a user.
Slide with an illustration of a library scene. Text: "It's not as fixed, but more like a sophisticated architecture that works as a super library with super talented librarians". The illustration shows a user entering, interacting with "ANDROMEDA", then "GEM" (a robot with a brain), and finally receiving an ad. The library itself is labeled "LATTICE".
But let me introduce you to it through a metaphor that actually helped even unlocking it for me back then. So, I'm using a library metaphor. And actually, this was one that Meta shared with us when all of these updates were released, only that, of course, I made my own tweaks and my own style to it, uh, to share with you guys the same way that back then we did with our own team at Ready Set.
So, let's go back to the library I was telling you. Let's think of it as the kind of library that has every book ever written. We are talking all subjects, genres, languages, all housed under one roof, organized by a system so advanced, so evolved that it knows not just what is within each book, but the relationship between every character, every plot, every idea, and all of that interconnected among all of these different books. And that's where we are operating today when it comes to Meta's algorithm.
Going back to the library itself, think of the library as Lattice. And before Lattice was deployed as today's system, let's think how Meta operated back then, as if it had different smaller libraries scattered across the city. One library for fitness, another one for health and wellness, another one for beauty, another one for finance. And each one of these libraries, they had their own books, their own systems, their own learnings, their own rules, but they really didn't talk to each other.
So, Lattice replaced all of that, unifying it under one giant unified library. And of course, when I'm talking about a library, I'm talking about ads, campaigns, users, insights, learning, one place that houses all of that into a single, uh, infrastructure. And let's think of Andromeda and GEM as the librarians that operate within Lattice.
Taking a pause here. Lattice as a library itself, the architectural foundation of Meta's AI ad delivery system. And then we have Andromeda and GEM as the two librarians.
So, that's when Andromeda comes in. Let's think of us, we pick our phones, we go into Instagram, meaning we go into Lattice's library. And then Andromeda is our doorman, doorwoman, doorperson, the front desk at the library. When you walk into it, you you just don't browse and go looking for the books that you want. It is Andromeda, the one that does this first pass on the different, uh, chances, opportunities, books, ads, we are talking about ads, remember, this is only a metaphor. And Andromeda scans the entire library in these milliseconds for a deep evaluation, narrowing down millions of ads into a short list of strong contenders. Again, this isn't the final pick, but the short list.
And here's what matters. If Andromeda doesn't put you or doesn't put me or our ads into this short list, nothing else matters as marketers, of course. It doesn't matter how much you're bidding, your budget, your campaign structure, your audience. If you're not on Andromeda's short list for the action itself, you're not in the game. So, that's why creative diversity is so relevant to make it into Andromeda's short list. And we'll go deeper into how to make it to the short list.
But before that, we are on the library. Andromeda gives us this list of a thousand candidates. So, who makes the final call on the final book, the final ad? That's GEM. GEM is Meta's generative ads recommendation model. And if Andromeda was like the front desk when going into the library, who retrieves the massive candidates list, GEM is the head librarian, this super brain. And if I'm not mistaken, I think that even Meta used this term of like the super brain, the expert who takes that list and makes a final and more precise recommendation based on everything it knows about you as a user, everything that knows about your behavior online, and everything that comes with that final recommendation, that final ad.
So, let's think into this metaphor. Think about Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, 100 Years of Solitude. We are talking about books here that have dozens of simultaneous plot lines, alliances, consequences that echo into decades, centuries, thousands of years. Those are hard to follow, like, personally, I, you know, like, read these books with like reference sheets on the side. Well, that's what GEM, uh, is doing when picking that final ad, connecting all of the dots, all of the references, all of the signals to pick that final contender.
And all of this is connected through sequential learning. This is maybe too technical at this point, but guys, eventually, we're going to see how this impacts on our operations, on our testing frameworks, and how we build campaigns within Ads Manager. So, this is like the theory part. Then we're going to the most, uh, funnier one. Um, so, going back to sequential learning, it is how GEM understands and connects all of these dots and references. And using a different example as well, let's, uh, think that I went and I booked a ski resort for my next vacations. And, uh, in the past, with how Meta's models were set up, what would happen is that once I booked my resort, my hotel, I would probably end up receiving more hotel ads for like a couple of weeks. But now what happens is that because of how sequential learning is set up and how GEM operates, is that the system knows and understands that once I booked that resort, I will start receiving all of these different ads on ski gear, snow, snow clothes, uh, the lift tickets, everything that goes with that initial action that I took as a user and started adding on top of that instead of keep the recurring messaging coming in.
So, that's what happens every time that we go into our feed, we go into our Reels, and we receive an Instagram ad, a Facebook ad. Going back to Andromeda, which is again, the one who took the spotlight. It is the responsible for the short list that eventually will make it to GEM's final pick. And the more diverse our ads can be, the more chances we have to actually make it to the short list. And that is exactly what led the industry conversations over the last two years, two and a half years to creative diversity. Because once we understand that Andromeda is making sophisticated distinctions about your creative even before the final action happens, is that we start asking, uh, how does it evaluate them? How do I get in into the short list? And when Andromeda evaluates ads that are too similar to each other, is that it doesn't run them at all because it clusters them as a single group. That's why creative diversity took also the spotlight alongside Andromeda. And let me explain that.
When it comes to creative diversity, we are talking about genuinely creating distinctive assets, addressing different personas, different messaging angles, different emotional territories, different visual styles, different contexts. And many of the speakers, uh, before me talked about this. Uh, it was Robin's talking about, uh, research. It was Saria about, uh, color design and the red on DoorDash, uh, bag. All of these things build how we're working on diversity. Uh, looking into Meta's official definition, creative, it says, creative diversification is an advertising strategy where marketers create unique campaign assets tailored to different potential customer personas or use cases. Unique campaign assets tailored to different potential customer personas or use cases. And that's the keyword, different, distinct. The goal isn't more ads, it's more meaningful different ads. It's a balance between quantity and quality.
And before I go further, I want to draw a line between these two concepts, diversity and iteration, because we've been familiarized with the iteration concept for many years, for longer than diversity at this point. And, uh, they aren't the same thing. And treating, treating them as if they are is one of the things, the mistakes, one of the most expensive mistakes that we can be making on Meta right now. We talked about creative diversity and how it aims to explore and unlock new personas, new territories. We'll talk more about diversity and how to get there. But when it comes to creative iteration, it is when you take an existing ad and make incremental changes. New hooks, new talents, changing the body, swapping the audio or the call to action, even mashing up top-performing ads into a new one, we are refining what already exists based on the signals that we are receiving.
It isn't that one is better than the other. We actually need both, uh, but for two different, uh, purposes. We need diversity for exploratory purposes, and we want iteration to exploit what is performing. And for that, I'm going with an example using actual motion ads on the creative strategy summit. If you go into everything that the motion team, uh, produced here, we have different formats, different styles, different creators, different ways of putting the messaging of having more, uh, subscribers to have more people joining in into the, uh, summit this year. All of these gives Andromeda more opportunities to add motion into their short list. So, this is great. However, we also want to capitalize on what is working. So, let's imagine that the two statics here on the left, uh, are showing great and strong conversion results, for which the motion team decided to iterate on those ads, adding more volume based on the dimensions, the signals that the original ones were showing, using similar styles, but swapping the speakers, the messaging, making these tweaks at the execution level. This doesn't mean that at the campaign level, we are only running these and that the motion team only stuck to these static images. No, we also have our diversity here, but we need the combination of the two. And I want to go to a different example.
On the diversify, diversification side, uh, here we are, uh, talking about a dog's food brand. All of these are example purposes. I did this myself using Gemini, all, uh, with static images for an easier lift. So, don't judge my quality. But here, the main goal is that we are seeing different type of audiences portrayed, different benefits, different messaging angles, visual styles, all of which, uh, we'll talk eventually as well as creative dimensions. Let's say that we go, we launch these ads, we start seeing some promising results. And then, uh, we exploit that winner ad, top-performing ad into different, uh, new ad units, which again, here, I'm using static images for, uh, the easier lift, but the recommended approach is to also exploit this into different formats, UGC videos, animations, again, it could be a mix, a hybrid of different, uh, formats. Uh, and all of these will also represent different signals for an Andromeda's evaluation. And something that I also want to call out and that has been gaining more relevance over the last two years, it has been in the market with different names, uh, for a longer time, but it's content creators partnership ads. I think that it was branded content eventually when it was launched, uh, years ago, but partnership ads today are performing as a unique format on its own, as a unit. Regardless that, yes, it will probably be a video asset in terms of an MP4 format, but partnership ads, uh, add a great diversity layer and score into ad accounts. I'm seeing and and as we are deploying these into, uh, our partners' accounts that already said, we are seeing how content creators partnership ads are gaining more and more traction, are getting more ad spend, are making it through the auctions, and bringing, uh, great, uh, performance results.
And kind of in line with, uh, content creators, we also have the talent as one of our testing dimensions. Who appears in the ad that we are working on? And of course, this is critical for us at Ready Set when it comes to, uh, working on different video strategies, but this applies to all formats, even for statics, animations. We are talking about the talent in the sense of who is the one that is being portrayed on on our ad and which psychological profile is addressing. So, with the main dimensions that I previously shared and the testing dimensions that we are covering now, the key insight is that the first ones, the main dimensions determine the persuasion strategy. Whereas the testing dimensions determine how many distinct executions, how many different styles we can run under a validated angle, under a validated CTP, so that we can create more diverse ads and we can have more entity IDs to make it to Andromeda's short list. I know it feels like I'm repeating Andromeda's short list over and over again, uh, but it is all because it's our end goal. We want to make it there. Like, it's a thousand of us, uh, to need to in today, uh, in order to understand how our ads, how our strategies can make it to that short list.

So, testing dimensions, we covered the visual hook, the visual style, uh, we have the formats, whether it is videos, GIFs, static images, animations, again, it could be a mix, a hybrid of different, uh, formats.
So, testing dimensions, we covered the visual hook, the visual style, uh, we have the formats, whether it is videos, GIFs, static images, animations, again, it could be a mix, a hybrid of different, uh, formats.

I know it feels like I'm repeating Andromeda's short list over and over again, uh, but it is all because it's our end goal. We want to make it there. Like, it's a thousand of us, uh, to need to in today, uh, in order to understand how our ads, how our strategies can make it to that short list.
So, testing dimensions, we covered the visual hook, the visual style, uh, we have the formats, whether it is videos, GIFs, static images, animations, again, it could be a mix, a hybrid of different, uh, formats.
So, testing dimensions, we covered the visual hook, the visual style, uh, we have the formats, whether it is videos, GIFs, static images, animations, again, it could be a mix, a hybrid of different, uh, formats.
So, testing dimensions, we covered the visual hook, the visual style, uh, we have the formats, whether it is videos, GIFs, static images, animations, again, it could be a mix, a hybrid of different, uh, formats. Uh, and all of these will also represent different signals for an Andromeda's evaluation.
